A Cheap Family Holiday in Bournemouth with TIPS

Bournemouth family holiday

We just got back from a lovely family holiday in Bournemouth, we have already booked our main holiday for this summer so we wanted a holiday that was cheap and cheerful.

Bournemouth is only an hour and half drive from us and we have been a fair few times before, actually it was the beach I use to visit with my family when I was a kid so it holds fond memories for me.

The beaches are lovely and sandy and in the summer the sea is warm(ish) And even in April the Little Lads were paddling up to their waists, we were really lucky with the weather and it was lovely and sunny for the majority of the time.

As we are a family of five and now that Violet is twelve years old we have to book two bedrooms when staying at hotels. When booking the hotels I found that trying to find a family room with interlinking rooms was coming up twice as expensive as two separate rooms. So we decided that The Mister would share a family room with the Little Lads and I would share a double room with Violet.

Best decision EVER, while The Mister battled with bed time routines and early rises, Violet and I watched chick flicks and had a lie in. I will be suggesting this set up every time!

We stayed in the Travelodge Bournemouth Seafront, it was really cheap as we booked well in advance. It was very basic but clean and was in an amazing location. Just a 5 minute walk from the beach, we parked our car when we arrived and didn't use it again until we checked out. Entertainment, shopping and restaurants were all within walking distance.

We are the sort of family that on a hot sunny day we could easily spend every day on the beach but as it is only April we did leave the beach to visit Oceanarium, which compared to other aquariums we have been to it was really affordable, we bought the family of five ticket which costs us £35.

Clutched with ice creams we  had a stroll around  the beautiful garden in the centre of Bournemouth, we were really surprised how tame the squirrels were and they kept coming up close to us to see if we had anything for them to eat.

And of course we couldn't visit Bournemouth Pier without eating at Harry Ramden's, which is one of the main reasons I love returning to Bournemouth, they do one of the best fish and chips I have ever  tried. I always just order the kids meal for myself as it's virtually the same size as the regular cod and chips but for £3.99 you get yummy succulent fish bites, a massive portion of chips, a drink (either juice or a bottle water) and a bag of raisins which is fantastic value.

My Top Tips for a Budget Friendly Holiday in Bournemouth:-

  • If you are a family of five or more try booking separate rooms rather than interlinking family rooms
  • When visiting Harry Ramden's try ordering the children's meals, I found that it was a good portion size for an adult with extras.
  • Take a picnic and have an afternoon at the Bournemouth Gardens, for a change of scenery and free family activity.
  • When visiting the amusement park/arcade, give each child a set amount of money and stick to it, because who doesn't become obsessed with trying to win those rubbish toys on the 2p slot machines?!!
We had a great little holiday in Bournemouth and will be booking to return again in the summer.

  1. Looks like you had a great time and lovely weather. We love Brighton but have yet to actually take the children there. We will often stay in a Travelodge when trying to keep the costs low, as a family of 6 we always need to book two rooms too and that can really add to the price but great tips thank you x

  2. Looks like an amazing break, think the boys are brave paddling up to their waists, I've still got the heating on! Violet is looking incredibly stylish in that photo - would love her top! x

  3. Looks like you had a lovely holiday, it's so good to just get away from it all and switch off for a while with the family isn't it. I hope you felt suitably refreshed xx
